Do we really need a resume anymore? Isn’t the way to get a new job through networking?
Yes and yes.
Resumes and networking go hand-in-hand. It’s not like networking is a new invention, you know. Even when I was starting out, networking was the key to getting your foot in the door.
Let’s say you meet someone through your network that knows about a job opportunity that is perfect for you. They will need to have your resume to take to their hiring manager, or at least to the HR department, right?
And most, if not all, companies nowadays require that you apply for jobs through their online portal, which means you need a resume.
So yes, we all need to have a resume. A good resume.
Early in my career I realized that my resume could be a powerful tool and I needed to treat it with the same level of respect as any PowerPoint presentation.
Once I did, I saw the results of my efforts with an increase in the number of interviews I received. A well-written resume, planned in advance, became part of my job search strategy.
As a corporate hiring manager, I’ve read hundreds of resumes. There have been some really great resumes; the kind where I wanted to call the candidate that very minute for an interview.
And there have been some really bad ones; so bad that it was a struggle to even read the document. We’ll never know if the candidate was good or bad because his resume blew any chance for an interview.
True, a resume will not earn you the job. But they are necessary when submitting an application, either online or in-person.
A resume can make you or break you when it comes to getting your foot in the door for an interview. Is using a mediocre resume worth the risk?
Let’s make sure your resume is professional and provides the information employers are looking for.
