Seriously; I was asked this question. It had been a very long afternoon of back-to-back-to-back interviews. My throat was dry to the point of scratchy and no one had offered me anything to drink.
Thank goodness I had brought my own bottle of water.
The vice-president looked me in the eye and asked me to provide a numeric answer to his question.
For a split second, I thought he was nuts. I was interviewing for a job in marketing. The company had nothing to do with oil and gas, or convenience stores, or anything remotely close to gas stations.
Why did he care if I knew how many gas stations there were in the United States?
And then it hit me. He didn’t care at all about my answer.
This revelation could not have come at a better time. I answered him and smiled. He smiled back, and we were done.
A few days later I got the job.
