Seriously, what is it about writing our own resumes?
It’s hard to write your own resume, to “toot your own horn”. The mere thought of it causes many to panic, breaking out into a sweat before they even get started.
Even those of us who are creative and enjoy writing suddenly have writers’ block when confronted with developing our own resume.
Thoughts like, “What should I include?” and “What should I leave out?” lead us to ramble. We think employers want to know every detail of every job.
And that’s wrong.
The result is usually a career laundry-list, an accurate yet boring document that includes most, if not all, of the jobs you’ve ever held. Yawn. This is usually done at the last-minute, under pressure when you have an interview. Tomorrow.
I’ve been in your shoes. And it’s not fun. It seems like it wasn’t that long ago that I struggled to even list my accomplishments on paper, just to have something titled “resume” in my possession.
The problem with writing our own resume is that we are too close to the action. We know the story too well sometimes, focusing on minutiae instead of on the big picture.
Similar to eliminating personal items from our homes, it’s best to have a helper and the same thing is true for our resumes. It’s easier to have a neutral person, such as a career coach, resume writer or at least a truthful friend, help out. An outsider can more easily take an impartial look at our work accomplishments and zone in on the important points.
Not to mention that some of us have difficulty when it comes to talking about our success. It’s easier for others to brag about our accomplishments.
I am your neutral person, the one who can pick out your career wins and toot your horn to develop a professional resume that will give employers the information they want.
